I will work to create jobs that stay in Minnesota and restore opportunity for all Minnesotans, starting with raising the minimum wage to $15.00 over the next few years. Expanding Pell grants and making college tuition tax deductible. We also believe in budget discipline that reduces our deficit.
I believe that the most effective way to increase opportunity for our families is a high quality, good paying job that raise standards for all workers in Minnesota, while making Minnesota businesses more competitive. I refuse to have tax giveaways that reward the most wealthy and corporate interest. I want good jobs, jobs that people will enjoy doing, that support families and give an equal chance to all.
These jobs will help strengthen and expand the lower and middle class in Minnesota. I think the government’s responsibility is to create an environment that will promote private sector investment, foster vigorous competition, and strengthen the foundations of an innovative economy. We must allow employees the right to organize without opposition from any external force. The work of women, people of color or immigrants has great dignity. I am committed to ensuring that these workers are treated with dignity and fairness.
We live in the wealthiest country in the world, however, that truth may seem irrelevant to the poor and disadvantaged as wealth is managed by a small group of people. The problem of wealth and wage disparity is a major moral issue and it is not simply an economic issue; it is political. Too many families and children are living in poverty and the number is increasing. This is not just wrong; it is shameful for the most prosperous country in the world and it has affected District 55 as well. Thousands of Minnesotans are being paid substandard wages that will not support a family and are forced to work longer hours or several jobs. We must also ensure that women are paid the same as men for the same job. This means equal pay for women. It’s unacceptable that our wives and daughters earn less than men because of their gender. This is monetary and gender bias. It must end and I will work to end it.
